About the TCBC

The Transylvania County Bird Club (TCBC) based in Brevard NC, is a bird watching group that was formed in January 1991 by the late Norma & Bill Siebenheller. Although Transylvania County is known for mountain biking and microbreweries, it is also a great destination for birdwatching. Due to the elevation change (which ranges from 2000-5600 feet), the county hosts approximately 16-18 different nesting species of warblers and is home to the only known Great Blue Heron rookery in Western North Carolina. The altitude gain on the Blue Ridge Parkway works well for more-northern birds such as Red Crossbill, nesting Peregrine Falcon, Veery, and others.

Our vision is to educate and inspire people to cherish and protect birds and the natural world in a changing climate. Transylvania County birders have been participating in the Audubon Christmas Bird Counts & Spring Bird Counts since 1972 and in the mid-1980s, TCBC took over responsibility as count-compilers for all bird counts conducted in the county.

The Club conducts regular bird walks to some of the top birding locations in the county to see Spring and Fall migrants. Anyone is welcome to join these free bird walks. Bird walks include strolling, light hiking and car birding modes of travel. The TCBC Field Trip Calendar is posted on our website.

Club membership is open to anyone interested in birds, natural history and conservation. Annual dues are $15.00 per family and includes a subscription to our quarterly newsletter Chip Notes.
